Katsuren Castle was the residence of Amawari, a powerful lord who until the very end resisted the authority of the king of the Ryukyus. After doing away with his rival, Gosamaru, Amawari unsuccessfully attacked Shuri and was subsequently slain in a battle at Katsuren Castle. With a spectacular panorama of Nakagusuku Bay, the castle is perched on a hill on the Katsuren Peninsula. In the north, the mountains near Kin Bay and small islands administered by Uruma City can be seen as well as the Chinen Peninsula, Kudaka Island and the ruins of Gosamaru’s residence, Nakagusuku Castle.
