Spiritual heritage and dramatic landscapes mix at ASMUI Spiritual Hikes

Renamed in December 2024, ASMUI Spiritual Hikes (formerly Daisekirinzan) offers a unique journey into Okinawa’s sacred landscapes and myths.

Located near Cape Hedo, the northernmost tip of Okinawa’s main island, this spiritual site is rooted in Ryukyu mythology as the place where the creator deity Amamikyu first descended, establishing two sacred “Asumui” sites. For centuries, it served as a prayer ground for the Ryukyu Kingdom, where rituals for prosperity, abundant harvests, and safe voyages were held. Today, visitors can explore this mystical terrain through themed hiking trails that blend nature, culture, and spirituality.

The trails, featuring 90 to 150-minute hikes, cater to diverse needs. Families and seniors can enjoy barrier-free paths while adventurous trekkers traverse lush forests and ancient worship sites. Its dense concentration of “utaki” (sacred groves) and legends enhances the area's spiritual ambiance, inviting reflection on Okinawa’s indigenous beliefs. However, practical considerations are essential: sturdy footwear is recommended for forested trails, and strollers or wheelchairs are limited to barrier-free routes. Pets are allowed outdoors but not in indoor facilities.

ASMUI Spiritual Hikes offer forest hiking and a cultural immersion in one. Visitors see dramatic rock formations and subtropical flora while connecting with the island’s soul. This destination is ideal for those seeking tranquility, historical depth, and a deeper understanding of Okinawa’s spiritual identity—a harmonious blend of myth and nature.
