Shurijo Castle prospered as the Ryukyu Kingdom’s center of politics, diplomacy, and culture and is now inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Shurijo Castle was rebuilt in 1992, and the castle and nearby historic assets, including several gates leading to the Shurijo Seiden and the castle walls, have become a historical park.
Again, the castle was almost entirely destroyed by fire on Oct. 31, 2019. Although the castle’s stone walls survived, the wooden structures that were the castle's main buildings burned to the ground. The restoration work on Seiden is ongoing and scheduled to be completed by fall 2026.
