During the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom, the dimensions of one's residence were determined based on social status in accordance with the Restriction Law. Following the abolition of the law in 1889, the residence of the Medorumake family, which is now known as Uchinaa-ya, was constructed. The building was moved and reconstructed at the present location in 2005. Featuring a himpun -- a partition wall -- and other distinctive characteristics of an old-fashioned Okinawan house, Uchinaa-ya offers the opportunity to get a glimpse into the lives of Okinawans in the old days.
Miyagi, Chatan Town
The area along Chatan's Miyagi coast is known as a mecca for water sports, including diving and surfing. Featuring a large soft coral reef system called ohanabatake, meaning field of flowers, the area is dotted with various dive spots that are easily accessible from the coast and always crowded with divers. A number of ocean view cafés, restaurants and bars are scattered along the Miyagi coast.
2-21 Chatan, Chatan Town
Situated in Araha Park's lawn area, this is a playground structure modeled after the Indian Oak -- a British sailing ship that ran aground on the shores of Chatan in 1840. It's said that all 67 crewmembers of the ship were rescued by the local residents, who then helped rebuild the ship, allowing the crew to sail home safely. Erected right next to the structure is a monument to the hospitality and warmhearted nature of the residents of the day.
