Bokunen Art Gallery
Bokunen's works often depict old Okinawan scenery, now found only on remote islands.
BOKUNEN ART GALLERY, which exhibits and sells the works of woodblock print artist Bokunen Naka, has relocated to the 3rd floor of Plaza House in Okinawa City from its former location in the Akara Building in the American Village, which is to be demolished.
Multidisciplinary Okinawan artist Bokunen Naka was born on Izena Island and started holding solo exhibitions in 1990, showing original prints and bronze works in Japan and abroad. He has designed a poster for the Japan Ministry of Environment and a commemorative postage stamp for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), among other acclaimed works.
This painting represents the "Okinawa no Ojousama" series. The woman’s “Hanakura (Flower Crown)” is made of Okinawan plants.
He is a woodblock print artist with deep ties to the Ryukyu Kingdom. His artworks are characterized by vibrant colors typical of a subtropical island, expressing a spirit of the islands of Okinawa and its natural environment.
Bokunen created many works about Shurijo Castle after it was destroyed in a fire.
His works are all highly original, symbolizing Okinawa from the artist's unique personality and sensibility. They reflect the spirit of Okinawa and Nirai Kanai, the mythical land of the gods beyond the sea and the spirits of the deceased ancestors.
