An evening of Heshikiya Eisa
Boasting a history spanning over 200 years, Heshikiya Eisa has maintained its original dance style up until the present day. Although the costumes the dancers wear are not very showy and its choreography may look rather simple, Heshikiya Eisa presents a distinctive feeling of tradition. The eisa is characterized by the particular way dancers handle the one-sided hand drum and the way they squat down slightly while dancing.
Heshikiya Eisa, designated one of the 100 Soundscape of Japan by the Ministry of Environment, is a must-see for Okinawan culture enthusiasts.
