Okinawa International Carnival

The Okinawa International Carnival has taken place on Gate 2 Street in Okinawa City since 1993. The carnival showcases the international flavor of the city, which is called home by people from 60 different countries.

The festival aims to promote harmony among residents, boost local businesses, and contribute to the city's development as a “City of International Culture and Tourism.”

The carnival features live music by local bands and a street parade of performing groups, including colorful Samba dancers. The 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force Band will belt out American favorites. The festival will be held as a part of the Okinawa International Festival and Okinawa Music Month.

Okinawa City is famous throughout Japan as the birthplace of Koza Rock, which was born as entertainment for the U.S. military. The genre had strong roots in Okinawan folk music that was firmly centered in the area and energized Okinawan people after the war.

Okinawa City celebrated the 50th anniversary of its establishment on Apr. 1, 1974, when Koza City and Misato Village merged.

Visitors to the carnival are asked to remember that there is no free parking available or a dedicated parking lot for the carnival. The use of public transportation is recommended. Lot (in front of Okinawa City Library) or nearby toll parking lots.
