Okinawan pottery has ancient roots

Tsuboya area in Naha has always been known as the “pottery town” of Okinawa since the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Even today, its main street is lined with shops selling pottery crafted by local artisans, most intended for everyday use.

Merchants in Tsuboya organize a festival every year where visitors can purchase their favorite pottery at a discount. There are also spots to make their own pottery as well under the guidance of the local craftsmen.

They also have an auction, where visitors can bid on the pieces they like and, if they get lucky, get a masterpiece at an extraordinarily reasonable price.
