The 48th Okinawa City Industry Festival
The Okinawa City Industrial Festival will be held for the 48th time over the weekend of Jan. 25 and 26. Once again, this popular annual event shows visitors handicrafts that Okinawa City is proud of and delicious foods with a local twist. Many exhibitors also offer a chance to test your own skills in the traditional crafts.
The 48th Okinawa City Industrial Festival will be even more spectacular than usual, as it will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of Okinawa City's establishment as a city. On the citizen participation stage, local children's groups, nursery school children, and high school students will perform dances and Eisa. On the second day, Sunday the 26th, artists such as Diamantes and jimama are scheduled to entertain on stage.
On the same day, a game by the Okinawa-based pro-basketball team, “Ryukyu Golden Kings,” takes place at Okinawa Arena. A free shuttle bus will run between Okinawa Arena and the industry festival venue so visitors can enjoy a full day of activities between the basketball game and the 48th Okinawa City Industry Festival.
More than 20 food trucks and stalls at the venue will ensure that no one needs to go hungry. Visitors can choose from a wide variety of food and drinks, including curry, okonomiyaki, yagi-jiru (goat soup), and soki soba (pork rib soba). In addition, local gourmet foods from Yamagata and Aichi prefectures, which have exchange programs with Okinawa City, will attract those who want something different.
A “Gara-pon lottery” offers a chance to win great prizes, such as return air tickets for Naha-Ishigaki and Naha-Miyako flights. Visitors need to collect at least three stamps from the festival shopping area to participate in the lottery.
The 48th Okinawa City Industrial Festival is packed with booths that will appeal to children and adults alike, including handicraft and work experiences, displays of vehicles at work, and a petting zoo. Everyone is welcome to come along with their family and friends.
