Yomitan Festival brings history alive

The Yomitan Festival has one of the longest uninterrupted runs of popular festivals on Okinawa. This year, it is marking its 50th anniversary.

From traditional Ryukyu dance to the thrilling bojutsu, the Yomitan Festival offers a diverse range of entertainment. The large concert of classical Ryukyu music, a main highlight, is a testament to the festival's rich cultural heritage.

The festival's highlight parade is marked by the appearance of an enormous replica of the Shinkosen, hand-crafted by villagers. The Shinkosen was a vessel that sailed from the Ryukyu Kingdom to China to pay tribute to the Chinese emperor in exchange of trading rights.
